This year the World No Tobacco Day, under the theme of “WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC)” was officially celebrated in Tehran on 31st May 2011 in the Ministry of Health and Medical Education (MOHME). WHO has selected FCTC as the theme to highlight the importance of the treaty, to stress Parties' obligations under the treaty, and to promote the essential role of the Conference of the Parties and WHO in supporting country efforts.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials, the Minister for Health and Medical Education, the Minister for Trade, Mine and Industries, Head of the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health Department (MOHME), representatives from the Health Commission of the Parliament, , the Center for Combating Smuggling, Iranian Population for Fighting against Tobacco Use (NGO), the World Health Organization (WHO), the National Secretariat for Tobacco Use Control, celebrities, health workers as well as other partners.
The ceremony was started with welcome speech, followed by speeches of senior officials as well as the delivery of the WHO Regional Director’s message on the occasion of WNTD. This year WHO awarded Dr Alireza Mesdaghinia , Deputy for Health, as one of the six winners in the Eastern Mediterranean Region , for his continuous and invaluable contribution to tobacco control. The award was presented during the ceremony.
During the ceremony the Mirza-e-Shirazi award along with an appreciation note were presented to those who had contributed positively towards tobacco control in the country. To mark the event, additional activities included public awareness campaigns against the use of tobacco were launched through interviews and media conferences on Radio and Television.
